has been a Southern Californian since 2008, but he's been in the sports writing game since his junior year of high school in 1977, covering sports and culture for his high school newspaper in Oklahoma City, Okla. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma in 1985, Matt spent nearly 25 years covering the sports scene in the Dallas, Texas area, and served as the area golf columnist for The Dallas Morning News from 1994-2004, while also handling what was known as "the Highland Park beat." In a six-year period, McKay was honored four times for his media contribution by the Northern Texas PGA.
His travel writing career brought him to the Coachella Valley several times over that period, and in 2008, he and wife Shelly decided to make Palm Springs their new home. Matt hosted the valley's top-rated golf radio program, THE ELEVATED TEE, for seven years while based in Palm Springs. The show broadcasted via a station featuring an All-Conservative Talk format, and all the while utilized Judd Spicer as the show's correspondent-at-large.
In the summer of 2013, Matt and Shelly discovered the mountain community of Idyllwild, and immediately fled the desert summers in favor of higher altitudes! Their youngest daughter, Madison (19) subsequently graduated from Idyllwild Arts Academy, and is now a sophomore at the University of Oregon. Matt and Shelly have been married for 28 years, and their eldest child, Angus, a.k.a. A.J. (23), is a Desert Chapel and BIOLA graduate now working with Seven Gables Real Estate in Newport Beach, CA. Daughter Marley (20), also a Desert Chapel graduate, is a junior at Azusa Pacific majoring in Sports Medicine. Hodad, the Mini-Dachshund, (7), and Owsley (2), the Australian Cattle Dog mix and Coachella Valley Animal Campus alumnus, are the family pets.
